The History of Homecoming Dresses

Did you know that the tradition of celebrating homecoming can be traced back in America to as early as 1911? Credit for the first homecoming is given to the University of Missouri, when it’s coach asked alumni of the school to help celebrate the location of their new football field, and “come home” to attend what would be an annual game.

As the idea took hold, others universities took note, and began to celebrate the “homecoming” of their students. A new tradition was born. Soon, pep rallies, parades, homecoming dances, and football games were all a part of an annual tradition that was celebrated in the fall months, at the beginning of the new school year.

The addition of a homecoming court is thought to have begun in the 1930’s, and is credited to high schools that celebrated the fall game and invitational with a parade. The crowning of a king and queen were first based on the float itself, and the students that rode on it. To become a king or queen, you must have participated in the parade, and helped build the school’s float. Later, this tradition changed so that the king and queen, often high school juniors or seniors, would be nominated and selected based on their school spirit, and their qualities as an individual.
